On June 19, members of the Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air cycling team lost their good friend and teammate Pete Makowki, who was hit and killed by a motorist. In addition to being a world-class athlete, Pete was a conscientious cyclist known as much for his caution on the road as he was for his strength on the hills.
To honor his memory, Pete’s teammates have launched a non-profit called “3 Feet for Pete.” This group will advocate enforcement of the three-feet law, which requires motorists give cyclists at least a three-foot berth.
In addition, the team is hosting a group ride and fundraiser on September 14 for anyone who likes to bicycle. This is not a race. Rather, the ride aims to coalesce the local cycling community in remembrance, celebration, and safety.
If you’re in or around Las Vegas on September 14, please consider riding with Pete’s team. We’ll be there.
Entry fee: $10; proceeds will go toward raising awareness of Nevada’s three-feet law and to educating riders and drivers about bicycling safety.

Route: The ride will travel south down Las Vegas Blvd. to Jean and back. This 25-mile out and back is suitable for any type of bike.
