Two days ago, the beach at Silver Strand shifted from being populated largely by surf bums on beach cruisers to being taken over by a herd of hard-charging orange-and-black from top-to-bottom cyclists.

It’s team camp time for the Optum Pro Cycling Team, and this year is different for one major reason. The team announced a big change for 2014 in that the racers—the best in the country—would be riding Diamondback.

Not just any Diamondbacks—the top-of-the-line Podium Equipe models. Only the best for the best racers in the country—the team features current US Road National Champion Jade Wilcoxson and famed sprinter Alex Candelario.

While the riders were out on monster rides all weekend, the mechanics worked tirelessly to prepare the full men's and women's (close to thirty riders') road and time trial bikes. We chatted with team mechanic Evan Mumford to get the scoop on how they felt about the switch to Diamondback.

“We’re putting extra attention into making sure the new time trial bikes are all dialed since Optum is such a strong TT team. Tom Zirbel (defending US National Time Trial Champion) is really excited about his TT frame. He said it’s one of the best-fitting time trial bikes he’s ever been on.”

As for the initial reaction to Diamondback's supplying the team with bikes, Mumford explained, “This is a big breakthrough for Diamondback but I don’t think there were any wary minds about it. When I tell people that Optum is on Diamondback this year they’re surprised. But Diamondback knows exactly what they’re doing. They’ve been in the industry for so long and it’s nothing but good things. They have the technology and the experience."

Stay tuned for interviews with team members coming out throughout the week.
